THE TRUTH WILL SET US FREE

Lawlessness and bullying go hand in hand in our world.  One of the most ghastly examples in history is remembered a few days after Christmas – the massacre of every boy under two years of age in the town of Bethlehem by a king as paranoid as he was tyrannical.  King Herod would stop at nothing to eliminate a baby he understood to be the rightful king of Israel as a rival to his reign of terror.  The irony is Herod was elected by the Romans, not the Jews, to be the Jewish king; he lacked even the requisite (for that day and culture) ethnic qualifications to be a legitimate candidate.  He spent his tenure suppressing that truth in brutality that engulfed even his immediate family.

On a much smaller scale – so far – we see lawlessness in our government today and bullying on the part of politically correct plutocrats that is designed as much to suppress truth as to enforce conformity to their views.  In January an administrative law judge in Oregon ordered Aaron Klein to make a wedding cake for a same sex couple or face fines; Klein shut down his business rather than violate his faith.  In December a federal judge in New Mexico ordered wedding photographers Elane and Jonathan Huguenin to make their services available to homosexual couples in response to a 2006 lawsuit after the Huguenins cited religious conviction mandating their refusal.  Gay marriage was not legal in New Mexico at the time and the Alliance Defending Freedom is appealing the case to the US Supreme Court.  In Colorado this Fall baker Jack Phillips was ordered by a federal judge to service a gay couple’s wedding even though gay marriage remains illegal in that state.  In constitutional America faith trumps government – especially where consumers are free to patronize other businesses who share their views. Ideas become law when enacted by a legislative body, not because a judge decrees it.  Judges who behave as these judges have are just as much criminals as others who flout the law.

On the plutocratic scale we have the recent specter of ESPN – lest readers think gay activists have cornered the market on bullying – refusing to run Christmas ads for a Catholic hospital that names Jesus as the reason for the season.  More recent is the controversy over the A & E Network’s Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson.  Robertson was suspended indefinitely from the show for comments he made to GQ Magazine having nothing to do with the show but yet disagreeing with the gay lifestyle and agenda.  Personally I grow increasingly testy over the constant cries that gay people are being bullied when most instances of bullying over homosexuality making news feature gays as the bullies.  After a public opinion uprising both ESPN and A & E backed down.  But it will keep happening and the only question should be what should decent people do.

And the advice I give is for everybody, but I suspect only professing Christians will find the inner strength for its sustained activation.

The first thing is to spend our sympathy on those who are being bullied, not on the bullies themselves.  That does not mean privately deploring the injustice; it means vocal and public support from each and every one of us who loves decency and fair play.  Phil Robertson ought to have the biggest fan club in the nation; Jack Phillips ought to be doing a land office business.  It doesn’t matter whether we agree or disagree with their views; we defend their right to express their convictions.  If they express themselves poorly, as the Robertson family acknowledges he did, the right remains intact.

Public outcry is potent.  Cracker Barrel Restaurants has apologized to their patrons for removing Duck Dynasty products from their shelves; the products are back.  The public uprising over Chick fil A resulted in a bummer for the bullies.

The second thing is to not waste our sympathy by indulging in hatred ourselves.  I sat near a grandfather filling his grandson’s head with homophobic jokes in a restaurant yesterday and – frankly – if all I knew about it was what I heard from this moron I would be out marching in favor of the gay agenda myself today.  I have always taught congregations I pastored that if we would speak on this topic at all it should be from the standpoint of a heart broken for wounded and suffering people; otherwise we do well not to speak at all.  If we are not part of a solution both truthful and compassionate we are just part of the problem.

The third and climactic thing is to actively believe the words of Jackson Senyonga, “The condition of society is the report card of the Church.”  That means what goes on in the world – for better or worse – is the responsibility of those carrying the Spirit of God.  Jesus said, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”  The Church – led by Her pastors – should become a mighty (albeit non-violent) army taking a cue from the groups of veterans and truckers who marched peacefully and respectfully on Washington during the shutdown to protest federal bullying.  They emulated those who marched to DC behind the Rev. Martin Luther King in 1963.  It was this kind of action – undertaken by this kind of humanity – that brought Abraham Lincoln to the presidency and galvanized Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon after him to preside over the Civil Rights Revolution.  The same equation threw the dictator Marcos out of the Philippines and broke the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall.  It is time we demanded a return to a nation of laws and justice rather than politically correct chaos.

            There is a catch.

I took the title for this piece from the famous verse in John 8 in which Jesus tells His disciples the truth will set them free.  Reality is that – taken out of context – His statement is meaningless.  He actually said if we continue as His disciples – if we hang with Him and hang every dimension of our lives on Him – we will then know the truth and the truth will make us free.  He is truth.  And no amount of political action will restore our nation to its God given greatness.  Only a Great Awakening can do that.

Apostasy Absolution?

There are many various translations of the Bible.  Recently, our church just switched over to the English Standard Version.  I personally enjoy reading a variety of scripture along with the study of Hebrew, Greek and Latin.  Each interpretation has the potential to cast some light on the Word.  So it should be with true, devout Christians.  We should constantly be evidencing the multi-faceted Truth in God’s Word.  Each of our lives should shed some more light on Him for the Glory of God.

It is my contention that despite varying Bible versions, Christians may be understood and “read” by how they stand on certain major issues.  Recently, I’ve had a key insight on what truly separates those who are passionate about God and His Word, and those who use it simply as a tool to advance their own desires and agendas.  Don’t forget that SATAN used the Bible to tempt our Lord Jesus Christ.  Can you imagine the audacity of throwing Christ’s own words back at Him in an attempt derail Him?  We see quite a lot of that going on today in the news.

Pope Francis’ recent comment “Who am I to judge”---is just a reworked “Judge not lest ye be judged” (Matthew 7:1) version of scripture.  However, when said completely out of context (like Satan in the wilderness with Jesus), it has the opposite effect:  It encourages and tempts people into sin.  His comments EMBOLDENED the LGBT community and ENCOURAGED them to list him as “Person of the Year 2013” on the cover of a gay magazine “The Advocate.”  Interestingly, the Vatican made NO comment on this disturbing chain of events or disavowed this “honor” publicly.
So, then obviously, we need to have a much keener radar detector as Christians in order to “smoke out” those who wrap themselves in a religious garb externally and those who have “internalized” the message.  The first and most obvious method is a Gift from God…the Ultimate Arbiter who comes to abide within our souls as an umpire…The Holy Spirit.  When we remain sensitive to the issues of God, He sets off the warning bells at the first sight of apostasy.

However, some new or inexperienced Christians have not honed their conscience and their relationship with the Holy Spirit into a finely tuned internal barometer through disciplined study and prayer.  They may love the Lord with all of their hearts, yet still be easily deceived by a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

Does God leave us helpless, therefore, with no ability to sniff out or discern good from evil?  Of course not!  While we are, in good faith, developing our relationship within with God Almighty, He has given us His Word to study and pray over.  Here’s some practical advice:

PRAY FOR WISDOM EVERY DAY!

It’s free and God gives it LIBERALLY to ALL who ask for it.  This is a no-brainer in the Christian life---ASK FOR WISDOM DAILY!  Personally, I like this version from the New Living Translation best…

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
~James 1:5

1=God

5=Instruction in His Law

Today I am going to give you a practical list of “warning signs” that can be found in the Bible as indicators of Apostasy.  Remember, God warns us that in the last days…there would be a “Great Apostasy.”

Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first
~2 Thessalonians 2:3

In these final days, many, many people who call themselves Christians will be pushing for an agenda that is contrary to God’s Word.  Even worse…they will be identifying this agenda as a “good” thing.  Jesus said:

Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?
~Luke 6:46

 Here’s the practical list.

CUT IT OUT AND TAPE IT ONTO YOUR WALL OR BIBLE IF NECESSARY!

The Four Apostasies in the Bible that felled both individual men and mighty empires is the same today as it was in ancient times:

1)  Slaughter of Innocents:
In Ancient times, this was evidenced by people sacrificing their children to the gods.  Today, ABORTION is the new “slaughter of innocents” and those who push this agenda in any way are advocating for an abomination that stinks in the nostrils of God:

~Joel 3:21

2)  Sanctification of Perversions within the Temple:
Now you might be wondering…how in the world do we commit this sin in modern times?  Very simply, GAY MARRIAGE is sanctification of a perversion.  While it is one matter to have Christian love and compassion for those caught up in this sin, it is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT situation to put the “stamp of approval” on this sin from our government and especially within our churches.

Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. Outside the city are the dogs—the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.
~Revelation 22:14-15

 3)  Replacement of God with Idols:

Now surely, you are thinking at this point, this one is an archaic pagan practice than no longer has any relevant application to our societies today.  THINK AGAIN.  When we elevate “man’s reasoning” over God’s wisdom, we are, in effect, replacing God with an idol…ourselves.  Today, we are attempting to replace God with the idol of “Human Secularism” of “Human Reasoning”…in effect, joining forces with the recent ATHEISM movement (weirdly, mentioned by Pope Francis in his Christmas Day message as a possible ALLY for Christians in obtaining World Peace).  Thus you see the frenzied attack by Atheists to remove all mention of God from our societies.  I have a scripture for Pope Francis to consider:

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
~2 Corinthians 6:14

  4)  Opposition and Hatred of Israel:

As true believers we must NEVER oppose the Throne of David.  God granted certain lands to the Jews in His never-changing, rock-solid Word.  As true Christians, we must NEVER take a position that is “Anti-God” ergo “Anti-Christ”.  The spirit of Antichrist is one in OPPOSITION to what God says.

While this does not mean the government of the State of Israel is perfect or without error…we MUST NOT SUPPORT any government or religious leader that seeks to divide Israel’s lands.  PERIOD…no further discussion amongst serious Christians is necessary.

See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land that the LORD swore he would give to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—and to their descendants after them.
~Deuteronomy 1:8

So, I don’t know what history Book or version of Scripture some politicians and clergy are basing their agendas on.  In EVERY version I’ve ever read, without complete repentance on these issues, there is….

Absolutely no Absolution

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.
~Galatians 6:7

Prayer:

Most High God, Master of the World and Creator of the Universe.  We REPENT for using your Word falsely to advance our own evil agendas.  We are THANKFUL that you are Merciful and Gracious to all who faithfully call upon Your Name.  We LOVE your Word and recommit to following the guidance of your Holy Spirit in all matters.  We realize that Your Word seems like “foolishness” to those who are perishing (1 Corinthians 1: 18 & 25), yet nevertheless we remain steadfast in our obedience to You.  Please hear our prayers as we REPENT for ourselves, our families and our Nation.  Lord, please have MERCY on those who call upon Your Name.  We pray this in the Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, Lord of Lords and King of Kings.  ~Amen

THE REAL CHRISTMAS

By James Wilson

Daddy!  Daddy!  Read the story.  Please.  “Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house…”  Before long he got to the part where the round and rather elfish fellow in the red suit slides down the chimney and leaves the presents.  The best part for me was not the presents.  It was decorating the tree and laying the fire – which never hurt Santa – and pretending to be sitting next to him while we shared the milk and cookies that were always left for him.  It was the essence of family in my imagination.  It was a warm and wonderful fantasy, and when my parents told me there was no Santa I just kept imagining the Christmas scene anyway.  It was too wonderful to let go.

Trouble is – if you want to call it trouble – there really is a Santa.  His real name is Nicholas and he lived in the city of Myra in what is now called Turkey.  He was a bishop in the Catholic Church in a time when there was only one Church.  He served during a time of savage persecution of Christians; he was arrested and tortured for his faith, although he did not die of it.  He was one of the leaders participating in the Council of Nicea, called by Emperor Constantine after legalization of the faith, and he had a hand  in composing the (still) only universal summary statement of the Faith.  He was designated a saint following earthly death and hence the Santa joins the Claus in his name.

The most amazing news about Nicholas is that – amid all he suffered and labored and tended to in his life and ministry – he found great joy traveling the streets of his city and leaving coins in the shoes children placed on their window sills at the end of day.  He had a special heart for sailors as well as for children, and he may even be the left-handed source of the proverb that God takes care of sailors and children.  His concern for the poor was both real and poignant, yet he is remembered not just as a man of compassion, but of compassion laced with whimsy.  Reminiscent of the God He served so well.

In our time we are much more attuned to a fat man in a red suit who will give us anything we ask for – and especially a new boy or girlfriend for Christmas if the seasonal movies tell us anything – than to the child of a carpenter born to die for us in a shabby manger located in a small cave in a forgotten town in Judea where all they produce are the lambs to be ceremonially killed in the capitol city.  The fat man requires nothing of us but a willingness to be dazzled by fantasies like my five-year-old Christmas scene; the child wants our whole life to be given over to Him as He gives His for us.  On top of that, the child insists on meeting our needs rather than our wants.  The trouble is, what powers the fat man’s generosity is the child’s sacrificial reality.  Nobody is more aware of that than a fat man who gave his heart and his body in gratitude for the Child.

When I was a parish priest we observed a Christmas custom in each church I led.  I had long since replaced cookies and milk with the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper on Christmas Eve, although God knows to this day I still love the Christmas scene I cherished when I get home from church.  At the church we would have one of our members dress as Santa and enter the nave or sanctuary just as I prepared to pray over the Supper.  I would catch sight of him and greet him from my station behind the altar.  I would acknowledge the pleasure of seeing him, with all the work he had ahead of him this night.  He would tell me he wanted to do first things first – on this night of all nights – and that meant worshipping the living Reason for the Season.  He would then come forward to receive Communion with the church’s children in tow, and all of us would receive a joy-filled and much needed adjustment to our perspective.

Santa Claus is real, a servant of God and no substitute for Him.  Nobody is clearer than St. Nicholas on the nature of the relationship.  He is first to say, “Jim, your idea of Christmas as a child comes true only because another child was born, lived and died for you.  First things first.”

AUTHENTIC HEALTHCARE REFORM

By James Wilson

A close associate of mine got a 5% cost of living raise effective January 1.  The trouble is it will not be enough to cover the hike in her medical premium – not near enough.  The same story is repeating in multiple versions all over the country as the Obamacare disaster infects greater and greater multitudes.  We have heard about the now six million Americans cancelled by their insurance companies because their policies no longer meet government standards – and the standard official line that these cancellations are good for their victims because they are forced to buy new policies that include pregnancy care for men and gender adjustment treatment for the 99.5% of Americans who do not want it.  But this is only in the individually mandated market, where government is counting on massive purchases of unwanted insurance to pay for the treatments of those who need them.

Anticipating the delayed coming of the business mandates companies have cut back large swaths of their workers to part-time status so their employers will not be forced to buy all or part of their insurance.  That means employees have less income to buy much more expensive insurance when government blithely tells them to just go to the exchanges – the ones that do not operate in the first place due to technical incompetence.  And when government legislates that fewer hours will now constitute full-time, the employers simply cut hours further to get under the lowered bar.

What if we if insisted on authentic healthcare reform?

The first awakening would be to the reality that authenticity in an American context requires freedom.  Even if we believed the inflated figure of thirty million Americans without health insurance – not healthcare, for free healthcare for the indigent and impoverished has been law on the books for decades – forcing the entire nation onto government-run exchanges to attempt to benefit less than 10% of us is madness.  Yet Obamacare depends for its survival on forcing enough healthy people to pay for the sick that we remain solvent on their backs.  A healthcare reform plan that reduces the freedom with which we have obtained healthcare in the past is not reform at all.

The second wake-up call would remind us we built the best healthcare system in history through healthy competition between competent professionals.  In a free market economy incompetence is punished by failure and competence is rewarded with success.  Competition is what keeps the game honest and a level playing field is the guarantor of competition.  That would mean the insurance companies are not permitted to penalize people for the “sin” of having a pre-existing condition, as these things in no way harm the actuarial tables by which the companies live.  It would mean companies would be denied their own protected market territory because policies would be portable from one job to another and across state lines.  It would mean companies had to do business across state lines in order to stay in the game.  And it would mean tort reform to reduce the crippling weight of malpractice insurance.  Patients should be compensated fairly for a loss and doctors who repeatedly prove themselves incompetent or unethical should face permanent loss of their license.  When government knows its sole responsibility is promoting competition it can stop tinkering with the system – from which nothing but unintended consequences ever comes.

The third heads-up would be to those who say critics offer no alternatives to Obamacare.  That has always been hogwash.  Congressman Tom Price, for one, offered a promising alternative at the same time Obamacare was first advanced.  The Price Plan had all the advantages claimed by Obamacare – from competitive exchanges to eliminating penalties for pre-existing conditions – and none of the coercion.  Unfortunately Price belonged to the party of no power (2009) in either house and his plan was never considered by the very leadership that condemned his party as “the party of No.”  Is this problem too complex?  To the only nation that has landed on the moon?

The Biblical Galatians declares Christ set us free for the sake of that freedom found only in Him.  I bring this up only because it seems freedom has been the primary object of the abundant life He brings from the beginning.  It is difficult to imagine a good gift that summarily cancels the best gift we’ve ever been given.  This might be a good time to pray our way back to the drawing board – democratically and legally displacing those blocking our path – and act on the fruit of that prayer.  I bring this up only because it seems not to have been tried.

Pour Me

In 1985, Sally Field won an Oscar.  In a cringing-worthy, but memorable acceptance speech, she excitedly said--”You LIKE me, You LIKE ME!”  The audience squirmed uncomfortably to see someone openly state what is virtually on everyone else’s heart.  It’s true…we all desire to be liked.  It seems popularity has become the Holy Grail not only for Hollywood narcissists but for glory-seeking Christians too.

I think it’s interesting that the concept has also spread to our Social Media.  We gauge our worth by how many “Likes” we have on FaceBook.
Even Pope Francis and Obama have gotten into the act.

In the 2012 election, Obama was consistently viewed as more “likable” than Romney in poll after poll.  He was the person most Americans would choose to invite over for a beer or their Holiday dinner party.  Apparently, this “likability” translated into low-information voters selecting the next American Idol.
Pope Francis has been recently described as the “Rock Star Pope.”  Undeniably, people LIKE Pope Francis and he seems to be encouraging this adulation.  He was just named Time’s “Person of the Year.”  His recent quote:  “Who am I to judge” has become the inclusiveness and diversity mantra for Human Secularists and LGBT activists alike.

Yet, here’s what the Bible says:
Do you not know that we will judge angels?
~1 Corinthians 6:3

Is there anyone else out there who finds it utterly incredulous that the POPE, the chosen leader of 1.2 BILLION Christians worldwide, seems incapable of simply telling his flock what is right and wrong according to the Word of God?  If HE can’t quote basic scripture (which is extremely clear on the issue of sexual sin and PARTICULARLY clear on the homosexual issue)…then may I suggest he is woefully unqualified for his job!

Even Pro-Abortion, Pro-Gay Marriage and Anti-Christian Obama praised Pope Francis’ comments.   Don’t you find this weird?…I guess he “likes” him.

So should followers of Jesus expect to be LIKED? …
"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
~John 15:18

You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
~Matthew 10:22

You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
~James 4:4

4= four corners of the earth
44=Worldwide (exponentially)

Coincidentally, Obama is the 44th President.  Hmmm…exponential enemy of God?  Just sayin’…
If the Bible prophets, disciples and apostles were stoned, burned at the stake, thrown into the lion’s den, cast into the fiery furnace, torn limb from limb and crucified….How in the world (pardon the pun) did popularity become a modern day measure of goodness?

Obama and the Pope also have something else in common.  They both claim that they want to eradicate poverty.  They believe they can alleviate everyone’s misery on the planet if they can just be put in charge of the purse strings.  Doesn’t that sound so nice?  I mean…who can possibly be opposed to removing poverty from the planet?

Interestingly, JUDAS was the ONLY disciple who ever expressed concern about redistributing wealth to the poor:
Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.”  He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
~John 12: 5-6

So, on one hand we have the Pope and Obama saying we can eradicate poverty in our lifetime, and we have Jesus saying “the poor you will always have with you.”  Hmmmm….Whom should we believe?  I think that another modern day translation of this scripture could easily begin with….DUH!
Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar.
 ~Romans 3:4

For even your brothers and the household of your father, Even they have dealt treacherously with you, Even they have cried aloud after you.  Do not believe them, although they may say nice things to you.
~Jeremiah 12:6

What Obama and the Pope don’t seem to understand is that POVERTY is a state of mind, body and spirit that we all MUST attain in order to approach the throne of God.  It is a SHADOW PICTURE of humility.  This is the same reason why nuns and priests take a VOW OF POVERTY in order to better serve the Lord.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
~Matthew 5:3

Obama and the Pope want to be popular…thus they feel the compelling inner need to eradicate “poorness” or HUMBLENESS in order to obtain this goal.
I can almost hear the gnashing of teeth that will accompany this unpopular position!

Compassionate Christians need to be more like Paul the Apostle:
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
~Galatians 1:10

I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.
~1 Corinthians 4:3

Basically, the Apostle Paul was saying:  “I couldn’t care less what you think about me.”

However, the ultimate arbiter in all matters is our Lord and Savior.  What did he say?

But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.
~John 2:24-25

but made Himself of no reputation
~Philippians 2:7a

Socialist government enslaves and impoverishes people.  This is a plain and simple Truth.  It does the EXACT OPPOSITE of what it purports to do.  It does not offer compassion for those least among us.  In fact, the VERY FIRST people to feel the effects of a wicked Marxist/Socialist government are the poor, weak and vulnerable in society.

If you truly love God and are called to be a Truth-teller…you won’t care who “likes” you when you confront falsehoods.  You may get “unfriended” or “blocked”, or possibly even “reported.”  But in the end, like all the information posted on the Social Media…

The TRUTH will always be floating out there forever.
__________

he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.
~Proverbs 28:19

And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
~Job 30:16

I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I traveled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.
